[Unit Project 2] How to shuffle for good mixing

 Introduction

When playing card games, the act of shuffling is essential. Shuffling is mainly done to prevent cheating. Card games are often played with strangers, especially at casinos and tournaments. Also, card games are based on a relationship of trust with your opponent. Therefore, it is necessary to shuffle correctly so that both players can play with peace of mind. On the other hand, if shuffled correctly, the game will unfold differently each time you play. By creating randomness in the game, you can have heated battles every time. Therefore, shuffling has the effect of guaranteeing the reliability of the game and making the game more interesting.

When I first entered a trading card game tournament, I didn't know how to shuffle properly. To begin with, I didn't even know that there were multiple types of shuffle. So I told my opponent that it was my first time playing in a tournament and that I didn't know how to shuffle. Fortunately, my opponent was kind enough to teach me how to shuffle. Then I practiced the correct shuffle a lot. As a result, I was able to prepare for matches, including shuffling, smoothly. I realized that smooth match preparation and proper shuffling are essential for players in the venue to play the match comfortably.

You will need

・Deck (Bunch of Cards. Prepare the cards you want to play, such as playing cards or trading cards.)

・Table

・Rubber mat (As you need. Makes it easier to pick up cards. Size is W600mm × H300mm. Most common rubber mats for card games are this size.)

Procedure

1.First, hold the deck in the non-dominant hand.

2.Next, deal one card at a time to several locations on the table. It depends on the number of cards in the deck, but if you have a deck with 40 or more cards, you should divide it into 6 to 8 sets. (Steps 1 and 2 are called "Deal shuffle.") At this time, check whether the cards have been tampered for cheating  with or not, and check the number of cards. Then, combine the divided cards into one.

3.Second, hold the deck with the thumb, the index finger, and the middle finger of the non-dominant hand.

4.Next, use the thumb and forefinger of the dominant hand to grab the cards about 3/4 at the bottom of the deck and pull them out of the deck.

5.Then, place the tip of the card in the dominant hand on top of the remaining cards, use the non-dominant finger to grab a few cards from the top of the stack in the dominant hand, and then pull out the cards in the dominant hand again.Repeat this process until there are no more cards in the dominant hand.(Steps 4 to 6 are called the "Hindu shuffle.")

6.Third, hold the deck again with the non-dominant hand. Turn the card sideways, with the picture side facing the palm, and press the thumb on the top of the card and  remaining fingers on the bottom.

7.Next, grab about half of the cards in the deck with the dominant hand.

8.Then, insert the cards in your dominant hand between the remaining cards, alternating between the cards in each hand. Slightly relax the non-dominant hand, let go of the dominant hand, and let the cards flow according to gravity.(Steps 7 to 9 are called the "Faro Shuffle")

By repeating the "Hindu Shuffle" and "Faro Shuffle" several times, the cards will mix well.

Conclusion

"Hindu shuffle" is the most popular shuffle in Japan, so I'm sure some of you are familiar with it. If you know, please play "Hindu shuffle" in a way that is comfortable for you.

By the way, I'll explain the origin of each shuffle name. "Hindu shuffle" got its name because it was a shuffle performed by Indian magicians. On the other hand, the word "Faro" in "Faro Shuffle" is said to originate from "pharaoh".

If you shuffle using this procedure, the cards will mix well. This is a reliable shuffle that is used in many card game tournaments. As mentioned at the beginning, card game matches are based on trust. I hope you have fun playing card games using this shuffle.
